Designed for patrons with Alzheimer’s, dementia, memory loss, cognitive impairment and their caregivers.
According to the most recent U.S. Census, an estimated 18.2% of Hudson’s population is comprised of persons over the age of 65. By comparison, the national average sits at approximately 17.3%. As determined by the Alzheimer’s Association, it is estimated that 6.7 million Americans who are ages 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s dementia, which accounts to 1 in 9 individuals. Furthermore, the Alzheimer’s Association estimates that Ohio will see a 13.6% increase in Americans over age 65 with Alzheimer’s dementia by 2025.
With these statistics in mind and support from the Hudson Community Foundation, the Hudson Library & Historical Society has developed a collection of materials focused on memory care. The library’s memory care collection consists of memory kits, picture books for seniors, as well as resources and guides for caregivers.
What are memory kits?
The library’s memory care kits are designed for people with Alzheimer’s, dementia, memory loss, or cognitive impairment. Each themed kit is designed to stimulate the mind and encourage positive, engaging interactions between an individual and their care partners. While encouraging brain activity, these kits promote a higher level of cognitive and emotional well-being.
All of the kits contain items to promote reminiscing such as books, puzzles, games, videos, and music. DVD and CD players can also be borrowed if needed to fully appreciate all items in the kits.
